Japan isnt a perfect place, it has its own social issues like any other society but specifically in Japan, stressed teenagers are becoming social outcasts.
Everyone knows that the Japanese are strict when it comes to study, its amazingly stressful because the high population of Japan means not everyone can make it into a university. All this leads to incredibly high expectations by parents and a constant uncertainty of what the future holds for the teenagers. Sadly, theres also a rise in the suicide rate for teenagers when final results for university entry are given out. Because of these highly demanding environments that teenagers are living in a social and psychological phenomena is occurring in Japan, hikikomori.
Around %1 of Japans 127,590,000 population are believed to be hikikomori. They are normally male teenagers who, completely fed up with their expectations lock themselves in their room for weeks, months and sometimes years, never leaving. Theyll watch TV, play video games really do anything that involves not leaving their room and parents will normally allow it by feeding them and pretending not to notice it because theyre too embarrassed of people finding out to get help. Its so bad that now theres even organizations and clinics that specifically deal with the hikikomori but most of them are silently suffering.
Hikikomori is quite similar to otaku but otaku is not considered as a social outcast and they have their own social life, it means they also go out to meet friends for exchanging ideas & hobbies, shopping, etc but still some diehard otaku are prone to be a hikikomori due to their unhealthy lifestyle.
